But how can you not love that face? We did mangage to get her into somewhat of a “sleepy state” for a few shots, but she woke up after we started shooting every time!

I know I say this all the time, but one of the things I love about my job is getting to watch families grow and change over the years. I’ve been photographing Reece every year since she was one-year-old, and she was so proud to show off her new baby sister to me. And so patient to play at the studio all afternoon while we tried to get her to go to sleep!

We even managed to capture a sweet, sleepy smile before we decided it was time to quit for the day. Love it!

How much do you love baby Milan’s awesome hair-do?

We found out that very soon after his photoshoot, baby Milan had to be taken by ambulance to the hospital because he had gotten very sick. I know it was such a scary experience for his parents. We are so happy that he is doing much better now and growing and eating like a champ!

What an amazing feeling to finally have that baby in your arms.

On some on newborn posts I talk about how the baby slept so great through the whole photo session and everything was so easy… well this is not one of those posts. (You don’t always want to hear about the things that go right do you?) Cash was not a fan of his first photoshoot. At all. He had a difficult time settling down and pretty much screamed the whole time despite all of our efforts to make him comfortable. We even discussed reshooting the next day, but he must have heard us talking and decided to be a bit too fussy for a session that day too. Poor guy… I sure hope we didn’t torture him too much. Here are some of the ones we did manage to get!

It is time to announce the winner of the Children’s Miracle Network donation contest. Congratulations to Michelle Currence! She has a three-year-old little guy and is expecting baby #2, so we will do some shots of her son, and of her growing tummy during our session in August. Can’t wait to meet you Michelle, and thanks again to everyone who donated to such a wonderful cause.

On a side note, the annual Cully’s Kids event is going to be held this weekend and you won’t want to miss it! You can purchase tickets to the Auction/Concert Friday night at the Hub, or the family picnic on Saturday at Newman Outdoor Field. Both cost $50 and go to help the fund Cullen Foundation which in turn gives grants to various children’s programs and charities such as The Ronald McDonald House, KampKACE, and Riding on Angels Wings. I’ll be at both events with my camera in hand so make sure to say hi!

This little guy's family waited nine long months to meet him. When little Joey decided to arrive a couple of weeks early, his dad was in the middle of the NHL playoffs and had to wait ten more days before he could join his family at home and finally meet his new little boy in person. This precious little girl was a perfect little model for her session. I loved her full head of hair!

I fell in love with this baby so hard, I tried to get her parents to let me adopt her, I tried to get some sort of visitation schedule set up, I even tried just shoo the parents away for the afternoon. None of which seemed to work. Maybe she could just call me Auntie?

In fact, I don’t know what we would have done with out Lane during this session. Baby Finn was having a hard time settling down, and Lane had this cute little lullaby that he sang over and over to his little brother, and it did the trick everytime!

These boys arrived as a pair! They were so much fun to work with because they slept so deeply throughout the session. They sure didn’t look like twins though… one little guy was smaller, had dark hair and was a bit more alert, and the other had a fuller face, blonde hair, and was very sleepy!

Having witnessed the “twin relationship” with my two boys, there really is nothing quite like the bond that these two will share.

These twins filled the typical boy/girl newborn roles… The little girl was very curious and alert and just didn’t want to close her eyes. The little boy didn’t care what was going on, and we couldn’t get him to OPEN his eyes!

This time I visited, it was winter and my trip started out with me in the ditch and their wonderful daddy coming to save me and pull me out. [Don't ask.] But, I was so excited to visit them this time because they had somebody super special to introduce me to! A new baby brother…

I got to spend a cozy afternoon with these boys and their awesome mama . I really thought maybe I could have stayed all day. They are the kind of people that just make you feel so comfortable. They make you want to hang around and never leave. This little guy is so lucky to have been born into such a wonderful family.

Just think of all the things these three big brothers are waiting to teach little baby “A”!

Thank you Swenson family for such a fabulous afternoon, (and for saving me from freezing to death all alone in the ditch!) I can’t wait until I can come and visit again… maybe next time another summertime session with FOUR boys running around!

I was able to capture a few of the moments that this mommy and daddy had with their sweet baby boy before they had to say goodbye to him forever and I can tell you that it was an experience that I will never forget. All in one day, these two amazing people had to come to the realization that their baby would not be born alive, give birth to him, take in every second they could with him, and then say goodbye. Absolutely heartwrenching. When they got pregnant again, it was a time filled with much anxiety and concern, as this family had learned that you can never really take a healthy baby for granted. I am happy to say, that this family now has a sweet new little girl in their lives to love and watch grow up. We all know that her big brother Beckett will be watching over her from heaven, and that he will never be forgotten.

A NOTE…

I will be going on a much needed vacation with my family and will be out of the studio all of next week. Galleries and orders will be a bit delayed because of this, but I will be getting right back into the swing of things on September 8th (when school starts for my kiddos!). I spent the weekend in San Diego CA learning from none other than the super fun, and super cool Baby As Art team, Carrie Sandoval and Brittany Woodall. I have admired their newborn work for quite sometime and was so honored to be able to attend their workshop. They keep their numbers very small and only allow 6 people to attend which ends up being an awesome, hands-on learning experience. Carrie was generous enough to invite us all to stay at her home while we were there… so literally the workshop did not end for two straight days. And me… getting a chance to rock one of the newborns to sleep! Sorry about the disheveled appearance… we kept it VERY warm in the studio for all the naked babies, so we were all a sweaty mess!

Just a little info for all of my readers....... The rialee photography calendar is officially booked for 2009 and we are not accepting any new appointments at this time. So... (hint, hint) please don't ask for an appoinment when I say I'm booked because I have been known to have a hard time saying no and end up booking myselft WAY too FULL! I will take names for a waiting list, and I apologize for anyone who is still wanting to get in for Christmas cards this year. Just remember to call in June next year! Also, I am currently looking for an office manager for rialee photography. The position would start the week of August 17th, and will be approximately 20-30 hours per week. Please email us if you are interested in learning more about this opening. I am still considering the assistant photographer position, but need to get the office position squared away first. And finally... to make you all just a little bit jealous... look at the yummy little newborn I got to play with this morning. Isn't he just the sweetest thing? I spent most of the session trying to think of a way to convince his parents to leave him with me for the rest of the day so I could just snuggle him all afternoon.... no such luck.

Well... Here is the sneak peek I promised the parents (and Grandma) of this delicious little package. He has had a tough first week of life! He had to be born at a hospital down in the cities because of the flood and then spent this last weekend in the hospital here for jaundice. Luckily, he was a perfect angel for his very first photo shoot and slept through all the poses we squished him into! More from his session later....

This little guy was so sweet and soooooo shy! I finally got him to crack a smile on the last few shots of our session!

This little newborn was so tiny…. she wore her big sister’s American Girl doll’s skirt! Also, a funny little story about this shot~~~ We had just gotten her settled on her tummy (she had no diaper on under her teensy weensy skirt) and I was looking through by camera to set up the shot. All of a sudden I saw a little puddle start to form under her legs. Her mommy was so great though… she let me grab the shot and THEN we cleaned her up! What we won’t do to get a photo.

Love this little girl… a photo of her from her session last spring hangs in the gallery at the loft. She turned two in November so she came back with the cutest orange dress and boots! She was also PAINFULLY shy… her mama (who I also ADORE!) and I were a little worried for the first half-hour or so. But…. after a few rousing renditions of the theme song from Scooby Doo she loosened up! [You should have seen us dancing and singing like crazy people... it was quite a sight.]

Another sweet newborn…. this one had a two-year-old big brother! As I’ve said before, for sibling shots at that age you take what you can get. This little guy gave me exactly two seconds to snap exactly two shots!

I loved his curly hair and pouty lips!

Pheww….. that was a lot of photos. Still more to come!

But these fabulous parents do have brand new boy girl twins! Because of some time in the NICU they were almost a month old on the day of our shoot, but since they were just 3 and 4 pounds when they were born they were still teeny tiny…and so sweet and delicious.

This little girl’s mama was worried after her session that we didn’t get any good photos of her sweet girl….Well I was on the phone with her when she first viewed her gallery and she was so tickled with the images. I could even hear the tears welling in her eyes. I don’t like that part about the way I do people’s galleries online…I really wish I had the chance to see people’s reactions to their photos. So~ it was fun for me to share in that with her…thanks “K”!

I’ve had a few sets of twins lately…and here are two of them. First up are these sweet one-month-old boy girl twins whose mommy and daddy were on a move across the country when they stopped in for their session. Now that’s dedication! I hope you are getting settled in “M” family!

The photo above cracks me up! She was such a little firecracker…I think she just might already be the boss of her brother! He fell fast asleep at the end of the session…but not her! She was afraid she might miss something!

And these two…doing their session sure brought me back to the days when MY twin boys were two! It never failed, if one was looking at me the other one wasn’t and vice versa! These guys were total sweeties though and it was so fun to spend the morning with them!

Here are some photos from sessions I’ve done in the past few weeks! I’m so behind that I need to lump some together…
First up is a group of cousins who got together at their grandparent’s farm for their photo shoot. The surroundings were beautiful, the sky was bright blue and the weather was perfect!

Big sisters…big helpers. This sweet family was blessed with an adorable baby boy and the girls had so much fun helping me at his newborn session…and getting a few of their own photos taken as well!

And finally is this busy little two-year-old. I can tell you that most two-year-olds are not big fans of getting their photos taken, and little “H” was no different…but I think we managed to distract her long enough to make her forget that she wasn’t supposed to be enjoying herself. I LOVED her aqua polkadot dress!

Ahhh…that first week

It makes such a difference when you are photographing a newborn that is under one week vs. one that is older than a week. When they are brand new, they are so much more likely to tolerate their clothes being changed, or being naked and squished up into a little bundle. This beautiful baby girl was one week old on the day of her session and was a perfect angel through the entire thing…no matter how many times we changed her clothes or her position!

Summer Schedule

Well, I am coming to the end of my first week of “work” up at the new studio. What I love the most is the uninterrupted time to get my work done (except for all of those times I have to leave to go pick up the kids from one activity and taxi them to the next one). I am excited to be able to be more focused on work when I’m at the studio and focused on family when I am at home. I am always striving to be a more “present” person, and this past year I have never felt less present. I was always trying to get one more thing done and telling the kids…yah I’ll be done in just a second…and then an hour later…well you know the deal. It is my goal to be able to just live in the moment, instead of trying to listen to how my 1st grader’s day was while trying to reply to an e-mail at the same time.

Okay…on to other things like busy schedules. July is now booked and August is almost booked. I only have a few spots left for the last week in August. I have also set dates for my summer Twin Cities sessions. I am planning to be there on July 23rd and 24th. Right now I am working out the details and locations, so if you are interested in setting up a session on one of those days, please e-mail me!

And…in honor of Father’s Day this weekend, here is a sneak peek from a newborn session I did up at the loft this week.

What can I say about this fabulous little family? I only met Holly a few months ago for her maternity session, but I now feel like we are friends! These are two people who I already know are going to be awesome parents. Here’s another reason why I like them so much… when I said “trust me”…they did!

Can I take your five-day-old baby outside today for a few shots?

Trust me.

How about if we lay him in the grass?

Trust me.

And is it okay if we lay him on the concrete?

Just trust me.

You guys were so great… and we got these incredible images because of it!

Now before you start going all …”she is so creative…blah blah blah” I stole this idea DIRECTLY from one of my favorite children and family photogs, the uber-talented Tara Whitney.

Thanks for such a fun session… can’t wait to work with baby “C” again.

this little guy was sweet. And you’d never know it by the photos we got, but he really hated his very first photo shoot. I think parents always get a little bit worried when their new baby fusses for the first hour or so of their session. But it never fails…they eventually fall asleep [even if it's just for a few minutes] and they end up with a gallery of photos that look like they “slept like a baby” the whole time. That is rarely the case…I think it has only happened ONCE! Little “C” must have nursed at least four times during his session, but it was the only way we could get him to settle down. So….the point of my little rant is to not get worried if your baby [or child for that matter] does not cooperate right away. I am a very patient photographer and will wait…and wait…and wait….for this…………….

And of course, as much as I love sleeping newborn shots, I am just as excited when I get newborn “eye contact”!

another sweet baby boy…

He was happiest in his mama’s arms….

But we did manage to coax him into sleeping for just a few minutes for us…we wanted to get some shots of him in this adorable hat. It has such a neat story behind it….. His mom was in Peru when she found out she was pregnant with him and so she bought this baby hat there. How cool is that?

I got to do a session with this precious baby girl when I was in the cities last week.

I spotted this gorgeous vintage looking chair and really wanted to try some shots on it. Baby “I” cooperated so nicely!

I had to get a few shots of her adorable big brothers too… love this one.

these are my cousins sweet babies and I was so happy that I got to do their very first photo shoot! Little baby girl “K” was quite the model already.

And little boy “K” was the sweetest brother…he seemed like he was already being protective of his sister.

He was quite a bit bigger than her–you can really tell in this photo.

He didn’t enjoy his individual shots nearly as much as his sister!

Finally…at the end of their session we got them both to fall alseep at the SAME time for this shot ~ the sweetest ever!

the BEST part about my job is getting to be around fresh newborn babies so often. This little guy I could have just sat and stared at forever! He was perfect. I met little “J” and his big sister “E” at their house for their session (it turns out I knew their family from my hometown!)…and while I was editing their session I was blown away by so many of the images. I don’t envy their mom when it comes time to choose! Here are a just a few of my favorites, but I really had a hard time narrowing it down to just these!

My first session with newborn twins…and I was honored to have it be with these two babies! Together they weighed less than seven pounds when they were born. Even at 11 weeks, they were still tiny but so so sweet.

And little boy “B” had quite the personality! With three older sisters at home and a twin sister, he is going to have to be able to hold his own and let me tell you…he is already practicing. He let us know when he didn’t want to do something…like wear that darn hat!

Since baby girl “B” was a TEENSY bit more cooperative, we got to do a few more of those sweet sleepy newborn shots with her.
